Great summary of micro-algae production methods! One assumption I’d challenge though is the 'nutritional superiority'. Something I learnt when partaking in a GFI hackathon for algae production is that micro-algae are generally poorly digested by humans, and indeed even by farmed animals too. I’d see this as one of the key barriers to adoption, as unlocking their nutritional value often requires additional downstream processing, and therefore further investment and R&D (beyond their tough cell walls, they also often contain anti-nutritional compounds, and face the same high nucleic acid content difficulties as single cell mycoproteins). Even in fish feed, where the animal physiology is generally better suited to consuming algae, microalgae are rarely nutritionally competitive as a protein source. Their potential as a source of omega-3s, however, looks much more promising.
